8/23/09 - All Over The Saddle

I gave a tour of the Saddle on Sunday, mostly to visit rare or interesting plants and good habitats on Powerline Road and in the kipukas around Kaumana Trail. The weather was fog and rain all day long, yet somehow I still got a bad sunburn!

Since we were motoring around to get from place to place, and the weather was very wet, we paid little attention to birds. In the 1881 lava flow kipukas we didn't hear or encounter any of the endangered birds until we got to the lower end of kipuka ahiu where I heard a distant akepa or creeper up in the canopy. (didn't have the time to follow and figure out which)

I'm starting to think about my Thanksgiving trip. I was spoiled last year by two autumn trips in 4 states. This year due to having far more volunteer projects I will only have a week of leave to use to visit Minnesota and Wisconsin. Last year brought a bumper crop of winter birds - far more than the previous two years. Unfortunately it's another late Thanksgiving this year, which won't help with the weather, but it does give more time for the boreal birds to venture South.

I'm looking on eBird to try to figure out what new things I can look for. My varied thrush from last year looks nice on the bar chart, being the only blip there. I am still in need of several finches, such as purple finch, lapland longspur and snow bunting. Towhee. Horned lark. Northern shrike. Raven. New owls. New hawks. Always need a better red-breasted nuthatch photo - those guys are so elusive.
