5/9-5/10/09 - Powerline Road, Mauna Loa Kipuka Mosaic

This weekend I searched a couple of new kipukas for rare plants, along the 1881 lava flow below Powerline Road. I haven't been out in this area since summer 2007 when I made one long trek a couple miles down the lava flows to the upper edges of the large kipukas that blend into the lower elevation forests. This weekend I was in the cluster of small and large kipukas on the 1881 lava at the lower end of kipuka ahiu. In particular I was exploring the largest of these which looks quite promising...

5/7/09 - Powerline Road

Posted Friday 8th May 2009 at 07:03 by bkrownd
The weather continues to be hot, dry and stable. Unfortunately, I was feeling terrible this morning, so I slept in a bit. I finally got going on Powerline Road about 10:30, and it was hot and clear.

My original plan for today was to finish searching the lower end of the 4.5km kipuka on Powerline Road for rare plants, and then start searching the next kipuka to the northeast of that, well below the road. I did a small number of bird counts on the way out. I watched 'amakihi...

5/3/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Below Tree Planting Road

Sunday morning I was still totally toasted from Saturday's big expedition. I slept in and didn't get out of the house until nearly 11AM. After filling up with coffee and snacks (more liquids this time!), I went up Saddle Road to see what kind of short afternoon outing would strike my fancy. I stopped at Tree Planting Road, intending to either do the diagonal southeast trail below Tree Planting Road, or to try to find Morita Camp Trail North of Saddle Road. There was constant gunfire from the...

5/2/09 - Powerline Road...And Beyond!

Posted Sunday 3rd May 2009 at 07:37 by bkrownd
The incredible dry and cloudless forecast was fulfilled! The weather was hot - yuck! - but also perfect for pushing the limits of how far I can go in a day. Unfortunately I was slow to get out of the house in the morning, so I only got a 6:45AM start. There was also one hunter headed out to the last kipuka at the same time.

I skipped most of the bird counts so I could make more distance. I did two counts along Powerline Road, catching an 'akiapola'au in the second. When I...

4/30/09 - Powerline Road, Kipuka Ahiu

Thursday brought drier weather, and continued vog over the eastern Saddle. I could still taste the sulfur in my throat this morning. The Sun felt a bit oppressive in the morning, suggesting that the dreaded heat of summer is on the way.

The weather was stuffy, stable and big expedition quality, but I got a late start and my focus is still on searching kipuka ahiu for more rare plants. Thursday I began to search the lower end of the kipuka on the North side of the meadows. ...
