2/28/09 - Powerline Road

Posted Sunday 1st March 2009 at 01:39 by bkrownd
The forecast was promising, but the forecast 0% chance of rain and cloud turned out to actually be 80% fog and blowing drizzle. Occasionally even full-blown rain. Yeah thank you, NOAA. I managed to do the first three miles of Powerline Road before deciding the weather was too unpredictable to stay out. It was a very disappointing outing of less than 3 hours, but some days I don't get out there at all. Unfortunately it was not any better at lower elevations and I returned to Hilo early in the...

2/27/09 - Kulani-Keauhou Bird Survey & Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, Wright Road Unit

Posted Saturday 28th February 2009 at 23:50 by bkrownd
On Friday morning I helped survey transect 309 in Keauhou Ranch, which runs through former pastures across about the middle of the wedge-shaped ranch at about 5000 feet elevation. The landscape is pastures of deep grass dotted with alien rubus thickets (which they're trying to poison away) and dryopteris (native) ferns, and scattered large trees sheltering tiny pockets of common native understory plants such as pilo, 'alani, 'akala, 'oha wai, 'ohelo, kawa'u, kopiko, etc. There were even some large...

2/22/09 - Powerline Road

I finally got back out on Powerline Road after weeks of unstable weather. Dawn was clear, but the cloud bank was climbing up the Saddle as I headed out, so I went straight for the big kipuka west of Powerline Road to get there before the fog. The morning was partly cloudy and cold, and the afternoon was calm with fog and drizzle. I started back at 3:45, and left well before "sunset". I could have stayed in the kipuka longer, but crossing the slick lava fields isn't too safe if it's...

2/21/09 - Kohala Summit

Volunteer weeding day at the Kilohana stream forest restoration unit. We worked at removing an infestation of passiflora vines. Kohala doesn't have a very large forested area to support a diverse bird population. 'Amakihi are the most numerous bird, and there were a few 'apapane, 'elepaio, white-eye and leiothrix. Sky larks in the pasture, of course.

On the way back to Hilo I stopped at Pu'u O'o Trail for a couple of hours. It was drizzly in a pleasant sort of way. I counted...

2/20/09 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR

Posted Saturday 21st February 2009 at 05:22 by bkrownd
The rain is back. I slept in and went up to Army Road to look for new ferns, hoping that the clouds would break in the afternoon. However, the rain was settled in for good. I spent a few hours searching a small area of the forest before deciding against staying out long enough to soak through my boots, which I'll have to wear for the work day tomorrow. I may have seen a new snail on one of the filmy ferns, but it was too tiny to tell. There were three i'iwi in the little area, which is a normal...
