12/30/07 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR

Posted Monday 31st December 2007 at 01:57 by bkrownd
I gave someone the grand tour of Pu'u Maka'ala NAR on windward Mauna Loa - the best native wet forest I'm familiar with. We did the complete loop in 8 hours, and the weather was absolutely perfect - cool and overcast, but dry. (a miracle, given the recent weather here) Saw only the most common birds - 'apapane, 'elepaio, 'oma'o and japanese white-eye - with the sole exception of a single i'iwi in one of the two usual locations where I occasionally hear one. (and never more than one)
