3/19/09 - Kipuka 'Ainahou (briefly)

Thunderstorms and monsoons continue. In response to the sound of rain on the roof, I slept in. I got up to the Saddle about 10:30 and amazingly it wasn't quite raining yet at Pu'u O'o Trail. I went out in kipuka 'ainahou to do some counts and work on my distance estimation with the laser rangefinder. Unfortunately the fog soon rolled in thick (laser rangefinder doesn't work in the fog) and within an hour it was raining. I had forgotten to bring my rain jacket so I returned to Hilo before it got stormy.

I did not hear the Hawai'i creeper in the usual area, and have not for a couple months now, but some of the birds were being unusually quiet. The only significant thing to report is that 'apapane and especially Japanese white-eye are still under-represented relative to the other birds species. I was enjoying watching 'oma'o flying here and there - the most beautiful bird we have here IMO, with its subtle and pleasing shading of browns and greys.
