9/28/08 - Powerline Road

Posted Monday 29th September 2008 at 06:07 by bkrownd
Crystal clear at dawn this morning, but I missed the boat and only got to Powerline Road at 8AM. I counted all the usual stations along the road, until I got to the bird survey transect in the 3 mile kipuka. The weather remained clear, so I went down the transect. I crossed the 1984 and 1852 lava fields, finding the old trail which is probably the one they used to get to the silversword bog. The old trail was a fun find, and explains the cairns I had previously seen in the 1852 lava field. The weather remained clear, and I was optimistic that I'd get several hours in the kipuka East of the lava field. The view down the 1852 lava field was super. Unfortunately after just over an hour in the kipuka the clouds closed in fast about 2PM, and I had to turn around after station 13, which is the furthest I got on my last visit over a year ago.

The pig damage in the kipuka was horrible - much worse than my last visit. Who knows when the last time a hunter went out there might have been - the lack of the usual hunter litter suggests none. There were at least 4 pigs in the upper end of the kipuka with me. I hoped they would come see me for some Machete Justice, but they ran like cowards, as usual. I got photos of a couple of interesting plants and did two bird counts. Didn't really see anything new.

I saw just one rare bird on the day - a lone 'akepa in the boggy 'ohi'a savanna area of the 3 mile kipuka. I heard a couple of "maybe" 'akepa and creeper calls in the far kipuka, but could not get a clear line of sight to them to confirm.
