7/30/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, South of Kaumana Trail

Posted Friday 31st July 2009 at 17:43 by bkrownd
I continued exploring the windward Saddle forests South of Kaumana Trail. The weather was pleasantly cooler Thursday and more cloudy, and it rained a bit around sunset.

I got an earlier start, but still not early enough. It's taking a long time to search this area. 3-4 hours of my day is lost just trudging to and from the location. It's about an hour from the car to bird survey transect 25, along Kaumana Trail and Opuhe Trail, and then at least another half hour along transect...

Sunday I returned to the same area I explored yesterday, near the beginning of bird survey transect 25. The weather was the same - calm and ideal, but slightly cooler and less humid. These would have been good days to explore distant kipukas, but the recent storms dampened my ambitions.

I was really pooped out after Saturday, so it was another late start. I left the car at 9:30. It was past noon before I was back in the interesting bit of native forest I found yesterday. I...

Saturday's weather was ideal for Saddle adventure. Unfortunately the forecast looked worse, so I slept in and went out to search for rare plants and explore in the forests South of Kaumana Trail. There was very little wind, and I was sweating rivers all day and even long after sunset.

On Kaumana Trail it was quiet in both the scrub forest on the 1855 lava and the kipukas. 'Apapane were flying high overhead to Somewhere Else. A few 'oma'o called from within the kipukas. 'Amakihi,...

7/19&21/09 - Powerline Road, Kipuka Ahiu

I had to completely abort any hope of an outing Satuday due to heavy rain, but Sunday-Tuesday was a brief dry spell. (back to rain rain rain Wednesday) I took advantage of the lull to get back out on Powerline Road for what seems like the first time since mid-May.

I have not completed searching the last kipuka on Powerline Road for rare plants, and I know there are some others out there. I got a big surprise on Sunday when I encountered a pair of unbelievably massive phyllostegia vines....

7/16/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Opuhe Trail

Posted Sunday 19th July 2009 at 07:28 by bkrownd
Another rainy morning, which gave way to a pleasant partly cloudy afternoon. I went up on the Saddle for the afternoon, and went into the forest South of Kaumana Trail. With the unstable weather and late start I didn't try to go very far, but instead I filled in unexplored parts near the areas I covered extensively in June. I found a couple of new 'anini trees along the way, and found some impressively extensive patches of undisturbed makole mat on the ground.

At the Kaumana...
