Such Beautiful Weather

Posted Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at 20:41 by Francis Duggan
The wattlebirds calling on the flowering gum trees
On a beautiful day in mid Winter of around eighteen degrees
Such beautiful weather for the time of year
Six weeks to September and Spring is drawing near
A pair of magpies with nesting material for their nest nearby
Make a whirring sound with their wings as they fly
Their young will be fully fledged by early Spring
The wonders of Nature is a marvellous thing
With black, gold and gray feathers...

On John Shaw Neilson

Posted Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at 20:38 by Francis Duggan
In places near Penola and Nhill where he used to live you will meet people who have not heard of his name
Yet in the Literary world his poems living on and his is an enduring fame
His poems literary gems one of Australia's best and with words he did have a way
But he was poor all of his life and he died a poor man and that does seem a sad thing to say.

His poems born of beauty of one of pure mind The Wimmera Mallee's best poet
In Australian literature of...

It Has Been More Than Three Decades

Posted Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at 20:33 by Francis Duggan
It has been more than three decades since I was in my prime the years have left me looking gray
And the biological clock on my life ticking on I have known a far better day
In my prime a below average local athlete and not any good at football
But of my time spent in Nature and walks in the fields are memories I love to recall.

I was the dunce of the classroom that I will not deny my favourite hate going to school
Though it did not worry me one little bit...

The Old Merri River

Posted Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at 20:28 by Francis Duggan
In and out of Lake Pertobe it winds it's way slow
Then on to the nearby ocean at a snail's pace it does flow
The old Merri that has inspired bards for to rhyme
The river as old as the father of time
In Lake Pertobe Park in the dawn of the day
The silver billed magpie in his cloak of dark and gray
Pipe his beautiful music melodious and clear
His kind known to sing every day of the year
The most of the Winter days chilly to cool
At Lady...

Rural Aussie Migrants

Posted Monday 22nd February 2010 at 20:14 by Francis Duggan
Suppose rural born and raised Australians who from Australia live far away
Do think of their home countryside every day
Nostalgia in the mind does not die easily
With that I'm sure many migrants would agree.

In their flights of fancy I bet they do hear
The butcherbird flute in the Spring of the year
And on a tall gum the magpie is in song
To warn others this patch to me does belong.

Though happy enough in a far foreign town...
