The Gray Currawong

Posted Saturday 10th October 2009 at 01:10 by Francis Duggan
Quite distinctive from their cousins pied currawong in their far shriller call
And without black or white feathers and gray overall
And far less gregarious as well as more rare
Yet their range overlap and territory they share,
Once heard their high pitched calls one could never mistake
With their strong beaks small birds bones they do crush and break
Scavengers and predators they do enjoy meat
And far smaller things than them they do kill to eat,...

10/8/09 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, Army Road

Posted Saturday 10th October 2009 at 01:07 by bkrownd
Updated Saturday 10th October 2009 at 01:21 by bkrownd
Scary thunderstorms rocked Hilo and the windward Saddle on Wednesday, so Thursday morning I was very conservative in my choice of outing. I slept in and eventually went to Army Road, where I haven't counted much in recent months. (Though I have been fairly active on the North side of Stainback Highway this year.) Sherbrooke Now Known As Yarra Ranges

Posted Saturday 10th October 2009 at 01:06 by Francis Duggan

The whistle of Puffing Billy climbing up the tracks through Selby that memory with me does remain
And the clouds of gray smoke billowing upwards from the engine...

An August Day

Posted Saturday 10th October 2009 at 01:01 by Francis Duggan
The wattles are laden with bright yellow flowers
And the magpies are piping in the cool wintery showers
In the first week of August with Spring ever near
To the Pacific lands of the southern hemisphere,
The often brown paddocks now looking more green
And the year's first wildflowers on the high ground are seen
And the southern Winter is growing very old
And the mornings are chilly without being cold
And the early nesting birds they whistle...

The Pied Currawong

Posted Saturday 10th October 2009 at 00:57 by Francis Duggan
Their name is a clue to their familiar song
The birds known to many as the pied currawong
In the wooded gully and on the higher ground
The echoes of their currawong notes resound,
In her nest of sticks high on an eucalypt the female bird lay
Three light brown eggs with dark freckles and from their territory they chase away
Bigger and smaller birds and on other birds young they even prey
Unflattering things of them some Nature lovers do say,
