Black Kites. Spring newcomer in the Pond of Soto de las Juntas. Rivas. Madrid. (1 Viewer)

IMG_5459.JPG
Upon arrival at Pond of Soto de las Juntas I saw flying over the cliffs a black kite. This bird spends the winter in sub-Saharan Africa and they come to Europe to breed in Spring.
The first ones arrived in late February to the Iberian peninsula but most of them come in April. They will stay until July or August when they will go to wintering to Africa.
On this date they are mating. Couples chase each other. Circling in their persecution they plummeted. The most spectacular flight is when the male turns in the air directing the legs up to touch the female ones. There are also frequently flights against each other and stop just before the collision spreading claws.
