Down In The Saltpan Country

Posted Saturday 17th April 2010 at 22:36 by Francis Duggan
Down in the Saltpan Country the saltpans white as snow
You won't see many animals where only saltbush grow
All through the thirsty Summer the days are warm and long
In the dry and the bare countryside known as the Coorong
Met an old bloke at Meningie the Coorong countryside he know
He said that old Lake Albert has never been so low
The water has retreated far inland from the shore
He said I've never seen it as low as this before
Down in the...

In Fancy The Song Of The Dipper

Posted Saturday 17th April 2010 at 22:30 by Francis Duggan
In fancy the song of the dipper I hear
The river he sings in to my thoughts are near
With snow white breast and mostly dark brown
As he sing on a rock midst the rapids he bobs up and down
A beautiful to look at bird with a plain enough song
Once seen and once heard him you never get wrong
As birds go one might say a stranger to renown

Post Bush Fires

Posted Saturday 17th April 2010 at 22:27 by Francis Duggan
Many houses burnt down and a reported 209 human beings and many animals dead
And for those where the fires were tough times are ahead

And blackened desolation in the burnt countryside
Some of the fires by humans deliberately lit which makes it more sad
People who do such things far more dangerous than mad
Leave them to live in prison till they die there one day
At least they are safe...

On A Very Warm Day

Posted Saturday 17th April 2010 at 22:24 by Francis Duggan
The wind blows warm air and the brown dust is flying across the bare paddock in the sunny sky
Forty six degrees the warmest day of Summer and everywhere looking so bare and so dry
In the south of the Country the bush fires are raging fanned on by the warm breath of the strong breeze
It burns it's way through the dry and brown grasslands and it burns it's way through the bushes and trees
In it's pathway many cattle and sheep to the huge flames fall victim in the cruelest...

An Old Land

Posted Friday 16th April 2010 at 22:38 by Francis Duggan
Bordered by barbed wire fences and stone ditches paddocks stony and brown
Off of the road out of Colac on towards Camperdown
A Land that was old in the dinosaur time
The source of many song and story and rhyme.

Long before the dark people from further north came
This was an old Country one without a name
They hunted and fished and had their corroborees
In the warm Summer days in the shade of the trees.

Where men never discovered...
