This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Success.

Posted Wednesday 11th January 2012 at 17:45 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, I've spent another day in the hide in the back garden and had some success. I am really pleased that I have sorted out the technicalities of using two flash units "in the field". I should now be able to take it to other locations, such as the small reserve down the road.
I have at least two photos I am very happy with. I will have to get them on to the computer and "develop" them. I will then put them either into the gallery here or put a link to my Dropbox account....

Hide work

Posted Monday 9th January 2012 at 11:09 by Denny Woodthorpe
I am actually writing this blog entry as I sit in my hide in the garden. Luckily my wifi reaches far enough for me to do so.
I am very happy with my setup at the moment. I just wish I had a few more birds to photograph. So far this morning I have only managed to get two shots of a starling. Neither are brilliant. Exposure and focussing are both spot on, but the poses are not great. I am now going to try calling some birds with birdsong.

Well, that didn't work. I have just spent...

Underway at last.

Posted Thursday 5th January 2012 at 11:50 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, I have at last started to do some photography again. As I write this, the camera is set up outside, focused on a perch near the feeders. I have two flash guns working as slave flash and I am operating the camera from inside the conservatory by remote shutter.
It is extremely windy and it keeps raining, but everything is inside plastic bags and a rain sleeve.
So far I have got just one phot - of a goldfinch. Trouble is, it is slightly out of focus. I am focussing manually on...

Back again.

Is it really 10 months since I posted to this blog?
Is it really 10 months since I did much bird photography?
Well, I'm determined to put all that right over the next few weeks.
As I write this, my daughter and family have gone back to Belgium after spending Christmas with us, and the place seems very quiet. Not only the house, but the garden seems very quiet also. I do not have many birds visiting the feeders this winter. A few Goldfinches, one solitary greenfinch and the usual...

Not doing a great deal.

Posted Sunday 6th February 2011 at 19:38 by Denny Woodthorpe
I'm feeling very frustrated at the moment as I am too busy to do any photography. I have a lot of gardening to do and not only does this prevent me from getting the camera out, it also keeps the birds away!
I have, I think, solved most of the technical problems of using flash for bird "portraiture" and have even incorporated a refelctor at the side of the perch which the birds have readily accepted. The only thing is I've ot had much chance to make use of it.
The quality...
