This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Another Garden First!

Posted Monday 29th November 2010 at 12:41 by Denny Woodthorpe
Wow!
I was busy decorating this morning, so didn't get much chance to keep an eye on the feeders, but after lunch I thought I would sit up in the study, do some work on the computer and keep a watch on the back garden.
I'm glad I did.
The cold and the snow has certainly brought the birds in and it was a hive of activity. Suddenly a bird flew in and went to land under the feeders. Unfortunatley, something spooked it and it flew straight out again, but not before I got a good...

Harsh Shadows

Posted Wednesday 10th November 2010 at 18:24 by Denny Woodthorpe
I've been thinking of the problem of harsh shadows when I'm using off-camera flash. I cannot afford to buy another flash gun at the moment, so I did some experiments in the garage this evening. I set up a white board about 3 feet away from the "bird" on the opposite side to the flash. At first it didn't seem to work. I then realised that with the flash set on zoom, there was very little light spilling out onto the board.
When I set the flash on 28mm, it worked a treat! There were...

A Certain Lack of Birds

Posted Monday 8th November 2010 at 13:32 by Denny Woodthorpe
I've not been able to sit and watch the birds in the garden for a week, as the grandchildren have been over on a visit. We had a great week with them though and I do actually prefer them to starlings!
Now it is all peace and quiet again, I thought I would put the camera out over the weekend and see what other visitors I could get.
Not much really. The usual Goldfinches, a female blackbird and lots of starlings (I'm sure they spoke Russian).
Light was very dull, so I thought...

Amazing again!

Posted Thursday 21st October 2010 at 18:53 by Denny Woodthorpe
I haven't seen the Great Spotted Woodpecker for a couple of days, but then again I have been a bit busy and not watching the feeders for long.
The goldfinches are back in force - 14 of them. Only one Greenfinch though.
I spotted a small brown bird on the floor this afternoon, with brown streaks on it. No, it was not a Siskin. When I got the binos on it, it turned out to be - a Redpoll!! Now I never expected that!
It is a close relative of the Siskin, so I'm getting close....

Amazing!!

Posted Monday 18th October 2010 at 20:02 by Denny Woodthorpe
It was only yesterday that I put the feeders out and announced in my blog that there were four birds I would love to attract sometime this winter.
This morning, I was busy cleaning the windows upstairs at the back of the house (from the inside) and, lo and behold, as I looked out at the feeders, there was a Great Spotted Woodpecker on the peanut feeder!! I really could not believe my eyes. I called to my wife, and frightened it off. Never mind, five minutes later it was back again.
