This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Mixed Emotions

Posted Tuesday 12th January 2010 at 17:07 by Denny Woodthorpe
Been a funny old day.
When I went out into the garden to put up the camera, a collared dove was sitting on one of the bird tables, just watching me. I was setting the camera up some way away from him(or her), so I walked quietly so as not to disturb him. He still sat there.
I then realised I was going to have to retrieve the perch from behind the table, so walked slowly up and around the bird and retrieved the perch.
Still no sign of disturbing it.
I set the camera up...

A day off for contemplation

Posted Sunday 10th January 2010 at 13:52 by Denny Woodthorpe
I'm having a day off from photography today. Partly because I thought I had better help around the house for a change (!) and partly because I want to work out where I am going next with my photography.
On the whole, I am happy with the results I am getting, both technically and aesthetically, but at the same time I feel I need more variety.
So where do I go next?
Do I keep on changing backgrounds and perches and hope for something different to come along?
Do I take my...

What a difference a day makes.

Posted Saturday 9th January 2010 at 16:12 by Denny Woodthorpe
I'm a happy bunny today. First off, I decided to run a series of test exposures on my remote set up, as I have been frustrated by the results just lately. I was pleased by what I found. I can operate at 2000th second at 200 ISO and get well exposed images (with FP flash).

I set the camera up for the day and was rewarded with what I feel is a good photo of a goldfinch and an "action" photo of a greeny with its wing raised.
I'm very happy with the activity in the garden....

Survival

Posted Friday 8th January 2010 at 18:21 by Denny Woodthorpe
I'm amazed as to how many of the birds survived last night's cold weather. It was around 10 degrees below freezing with snow showers. I know I wouldn't have liked to have been out in it all night.
I was worried this morning because I only counted two goldfinches out of the 10 or so I have had in the garden lately. By this afternoon, the number had risen to 6, so hopefully more have survived than I first thought.
What is nice to see is the arrival of two more robins, making 5 in all....

Snow - and birds

Posted Thursday 7th January 2010 at 16:04 by Denny Woodthorpe
As I write this, it is snowing once again. We are perhaps a bit better off than many areas of Britain, but it is bad enough. The birds are obviously finding life difficult. They seem very appreciative of my feeders. Two feeders have sunflower hearts, one has niger seed and one has fat balls. I also have two bird tables with loose feed on them and I am having to refill the sunflower heart feeders and the bird tables twice a day!
I counted ( or estimated) over 100 birds in the garden at the...
