After the scarcity of birds in beach Ladeira early summer because most of waders have gone north, in late August had become a bunch of sanderlings, young or in transition to winter plumage that I havent seen before during the summer. Sometimes, the best birding involves not just the ticks you gather during a productive day in the field, nor just immersing oneself in birding spectacles. Sometimes, the two come together to offer something close to birding perfection. Got an unexpected bonus on Sunday that allowed the birding stars to align in my favour. Boss Chick decided to be kind to me and let me have my car. No sooner had she uttered these words, than I was on the M8 heading East. I vaguely herd some instruction...
Here's my latest birding adventure :) http://greatbritishbirdhunt.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/a-trip-to-longham-lakes.html
Bulgaria is the country for Red-backed Shrikes photography. It's been a long time since I last went out watching and photographing them. It was high time to spend some time with my favourite object and decided to explore the areas next to Sofia, Bulgaria. It is migration time so there should be some other birds around too. So I did, managed to wake up before sunrise which was a bit difficult and soon I was on my way early enough to arrive at the first location at the "golden hour" for...
This is my little blog where I'm trying to take photos of all the birds found in the RSPB book (some 272 species). Enjoy :) http://greatbritishbirdhunt.blogspot.co.uk/
A couple of days ago I went to see the stretch between Lóbrigo beach and Ostral islet all in the end of cove of Rianxo. It rained hard especially the second day and the photos are not very good. More in http://birdingmanzanares.blogspot.com.es/

In the bridge of the Ulla River in Catoira, the river quadruples its size to half a kilometer wide and the influence of the sea is becoming more apparent. There were a number of mallards under the bridge. This heron was in Catoira side beside the ruined towers. Obviously there were a lot of lesser black headed gulls and yellow-legged ones. From Punta Palleiro Arousa Stuary begins, here already has more than a mile at the narrowest part. The influence of the tide in Rial is brutal, leaving...
Wader Quest has just enjoyed one of its best weekends ever in terms of garnering support and raising funds and awareness about what we do. Mind you it didn't bode well when we arrived at the top of the hill overlooking the bird fair site and saw the valley was being rained upon in no uncertain way, but thankfully the weather was kind to us for most of the weekend. http://www.waderquest.org/2014/08/fantastic-bird-fair-weekend.html
I went to the Isle of Sálvora incorporated into the Atlantic Islands National Park with Cies and Ons in 2007. A whole string of islets extends between Aguiño and Sálvora Isle where I could see these shags. Up to 65 of them can be counted in the detail of this photo of the islet of Noro. I could see some immature as the right one. Over the sea I saw some shags and yellow-legger gulls. Yellow-legged gulls are the most common bird on Sálvora isle. The census was 12,206 in 2011. I saw several...

a bit later with this than expected, but as its the quiet season for birds, now's as good a time as any. I set out this year to have a 'good year', not a big year as such, with lots of chasing about the country twitching, but expanding my horizons, working on lifer ticks of ordinary species, immersing myself in birdlife, really, seeking the best of both worlds. So far, i'd say that the year has been a roaring success. 11 lifers, plus a dozen or so unexpected year ticks (birds i'd seen...
In the breakwater of Aguiño harbour you could see a group of black-headed gulls, but the left one looked more like a mediterranean Gull. A young ringed plover walked on the beach and another one was on the breakwater. Flocks of Yellow-legged gull occupied the bottom of the breakwater, but in a quick look I did not see great black-backed gulls like in the winter. I saw this ringed cormorant on a distant rock. Maybe G?8 white plastic ring on the left leg. The metal one on the right was...
Different names and labels are something which has vexed birders since we first startign talkign about that sort of thing. I don't the categories suggested by Bill Oddie but something more ethereal. I've written a lot about how I struggle to balance a quest for ticks with the joy of sometimes just immersing myself in bird life. A recent Big Day Out raised a new issue- am I a 'Nature Reserve Birder' or am I a 'Wild Birder'? After last months trip to St Abb's Head, I opted this time to...
The Mountain Plover, often known as “Prairie Ghost”, is a small ground nesting bird living in the short-grass prairie ecoregion of Rocky Mountain West of North America. Since the 1920’s, native short-grass prairie habitat has diminished as much as 52% due to conversion of these grasslands to crop land agriculture, diminished fire frequency, destruction of prairie dog towns and decline of native grazers.http://www.waderquest.org/2014/08/guest-blog-mountain-plover-nest.html
The Atlantic Ocean shoreline outside Arousa Stuary extends north from Aguiño. In this place begins Corrubedo Natural Park. Wagtails are usual on beach Ladeira beside Corrubedo Village, both black and grey. I saw some cormorant on the rocks far away. Too far away for see if they are cormorants or shags. Magpies were on the roofs of the houses beside de beach. Sparrows look for food in the beach. In the distance we saw what I think were two greenshanks and a bar-tailed godwit in the back. Here...
It has been a bit over a month since the last Little Curlew update and we have some news to report. The most interesting thing that has happened since the last update is that LC 131943 has kept moving north. It arrived on the coast of China between 19th of June and 24th of June landing between Hong Kong and Shantou. On the 28th of June it was on an island 60 km east of Fuqing, in the Putian region (where 131945 and 131947 also stopped on migration). From here, it moved to Rudong, where it...
Carrions crows were abundant in the slime of Pozo Negro in Boiro. There was a lot of gulls, both lesser black headed ones as yellow-legged ones. Half a dozen grey herons were beyond the river. Some of them flied up to the trees. Apparently they are more prevalent in the early hours of the morning and with high tide. Later they scatter to the beachs around. But I have to confirm this item in the rest of the summer. This couple of egrets was what surprised me more. More in...
I am ashamed to say that I had to ask this question. "It's what keeps your favourite group of birds alive and thriving for you to look at!" came the reply. I was informed, for my education that benthos is the community of organisms that live under, on or over the bed of a body of water, be it freshwater or saltwater; scientifically called the benthic zone.http://www.waderquest.org/2014/07/benthos-whats-that.html
... who can resist a tick? Black-winged Pratincole is a very rare bird in the UK. There have been just 36 records up to the end of 2012 according to Rare Bird Alert. There was one reported last year that we heard about but that did not linger and was only seen on one occasion. If last year's bird is accepted then the current individual that is doing the rounds of the east coast of England will be the 38th. It first appeared up in the north-east but did not stay anywhere very long, visiting...
Arousa Norte. Inner Stuary I went to Ponte Beluso. Tree years ago there were half a dozen egrets. I saw no one the last day. Only lesser black-headed gulls and yellow-legged ones. I went to Bico de Mar to see if there was egrets or grey harens in Pozo de Comba. I saw a lot of mullets jumping over the waters. There was not egrets but I saw this grey one on a stone with some mallards at his feet to discover that there were six of them on the remains of a mussels platform floats. more in...
Two Sundays agos I went to Parque Forestal de Entrevías. I saw a hoopoe constantly. I saw a couple of green woodpeckers too. Among and almond tree was this great tit. These tree sparrows were in a pine near. The hoopoe reappeared elsewhere. And also one of the two partners of the woodpeckers couple. The hoopoe was again re-arranged.But the woodpecker was in the same sleepy. In a pine a male serin allowed me to take a picture. It is the closest wild animal to a canary you can see wild in...
So many of the Midsomer Murders series are set around twee village fêtes and carnivals, well, today we felt like we were on the set of one of those episodes, half expecting one of the Chief Inspector Barnabys to stroll past with one of his hapless sergeants; instead we got a couple of local Community Support Officers...http://www.waderquest.org/2014/07/midsomer-murders-without-bodies.html
I am posting this to let anyone who chatted regularly with my husband, The Gaffer, know that he passed away on 22nd June. He was a brave, private man who loved nature. He will be deeply missed.
East of riparian forest which is my usual hunting ground, trees begin to clear quickly and a field extends towards Casa de Campo. Some great tit like this is still in the last trees. But soom a open area is seem. more in http://birdingmanzanares.blogspot.com.es/2014/07/somosaguas-east-fields.html
