300 Nautical Miles off the Coast of Canada (Unknown)

My twin brother took this picture of this cute bird 300 Nautical Miles off the coast of Newfoundland. He is on the HMCS Montreal, a Canadian Navy frigate. They are on patrol outside the 200 mile limit looking for illegal fishing. This bird found its way to their deck and hung around the ship for a couple of days. It stayed within the the wings of the ship (area of the ship that is wind protected). It flew away after a couple days.

The ships crew called the bird "Herb" and enjoyed its company for a couple days.

To me it looks like a bird that belongs in a forest, not 300 Nautical Miles from land. Could it have been swept out in a North Atlantic Storm and just decided to rest on the ship for a few days before flying back to Newfoundland?

Any ideas?

Looks like it could be a Purple Finch! It occurs in Newfoundland during the summer. You're right--should be in open woods, not on the open sea!
