A very red woodpecker.
Bernard Brunet. Painted illustration.

Picus canus dedemi. Female. Sumatra.

A very distinctive race of the grey-headed woodpecker and probably a future split.

The grey-headed woodpecker lives from France to eastern Asia, with two isolated subspecies in Malaysia and Sumatra.
Scientific name
picus canus dedemi
Many thanks for all your really kind and nice comments :t:

Hans-in Sumatra lives too the white-bellied woodpecker (dryocopus javensis): a south asian counterpart of our eurasian black woodpecker...and except for his white belly, the male of this species is black with a red crown ;)

It looks so real! When I first viewed the thumbnail, I thought it was a Photo! Fantastic work, Bernard!

Bernard, This is very special. Never heard of a red Woodpecker. Never to old to learn so we say. Great drawing. Very well done. :t::t::t:

I love your paintings Bernard. So colorful, so lovely!

A super painted illustration, Bernard  :t: ! I must get down to Sumatra and Java one of these days. Also very different to the Taiwan endemic subspecies, P.c.tancolo.

Many thanks again everyone for your so kind comments :t::t:

Luiz-in France and Europe,we have the subspecies (picus canus) canus:just a green woodpecker, with a red forehead (and black in the female)...as many other species in the family ;)

Mark-Good luck in Sumatra! I have never seen any photo of this race to date ;)
