Adelie Procession Sequence showing a group of Adelie Penguins, pygoscelis adeliae, gathering together to cross a frozen pool in the pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Because this frozen pool was different from the regular environment they were very diffident about crossing it. It was as if they thought it was open water, rather than frozen, and that the risk of a Leopard Seal may have been present. Once they did get going (see the next 2 images and the first from yesterday) they hurried across, skidding and sliding as well as running.
