American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis)

The weather has been unseasonably cold the last several days with temps way below freezing and a blustery wind. The garden birds have been eating their little heads off and continue to go through three pounds of sunflower hearts per day!!!!! Incredible!

I'm still seeing a flock of at least 60 of these birds in the garden at one time and there are probably more as I can't see the tree tops from the hide. When they take a break from the eating they fly off to the tops of the birch trees and look like yellow ornaments in the tops of the tree. Very cute. They make quite a bit of noise having their little finchy chats up there. Probably disscussing the good eats at "Deanne's All You Can Eat Buffet"!
