American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis)

I've been pretty busy the last few days so thought I'd share this photo from a couple weeks ago. I thought him quite a handsome bird in his winter plumage. I still have a few of these birds changing into their winter 'coats' so they are a bit bedraggled looking but this guy looks pristine in his new feathers.

There is still a very large flock of these around and I had huge numbers, at least 60 birds here in the feeders during the snow storm last Sunday. They are emptying out my large Niger seed feeder in three days and I never remember having to fill that as often before. It's lovely having so many birds around.

These birds are so beautiful and yet very different to our Goldfinches.

Deane, Very nice shot, yes the winter plumage, while it is not as bright as sumer is a great look for these birds.
