American Goldfinch

American Goldfinch (Carduelis tristis)

I've been pretty busy the last few days so thought I'd share this photo from a couple weeks ago. I thought him quite a handsome bird in his winter plumage. I still have a few of these birds changing into their winter 'coats' so they are a bit bedraggled looking but this guy looks pristine in his new feathers.

There is still a very large flock of these around and I had huge numbers, at least 60 birds here in the feeders during the snow storm last Sunday. They are emptying out my large Niger seed feeder in three days and I never remember having to fill that as often before. It's lovely having so many birds around.
