Had to check the distribution map at Cornell Lab to see why I'd never seen this species. The answer was clear - it's not found above Baja along the west coast, and I've never been to Baja. Lovely image and bird. I may have to see more of the Americas over the next few years ;)

Looks like it was the leader of a marching event.
