Aussie Darter
Not quite a newbie, but our first sighting (12 months ago) was not close & our one photo not usable, so we were more than happy to catch this beauty close by.

Formerly a subspecies of the Asian Darter (A. melanogaster), now considered a seperate species.
Habitat
The Darter is found in wetlands and sheltered coastal waters, mainly in the Tropics and Subtropics. It prefers smooth, open waters, for feeding, with tree trunks, branches, stumps or posts fringing the water, for resting and drying its wings.
Location
Noosaville, Queensland, Australia
Date taken
13th June 2010
Scientific name
Anhinga novaehollandiae
Equipment used
Sony a200 mm75-300
Well you've certainly nailed this un Eric, twice by the looks of it, cracking capture mate, great looking animal.

We must admit that the "melanogaster" name doesn't suit it at all... it's better considered a separate species, "albigaster" for example!!! :-O

:bounce: Many congrats on getting such a great view and picture of it, amigo Eric, and love the "feeling of harbour" added by the very blurred background, but still identificable!!! :t: :t:

Good catch, Eric. I photographed one of these birds on top of a tree in Panama a few months ago. He had a very long neck indeed. Well done!
