Australian Pelican (Pelicanus conspicillatus)

Australian Pelican

This fellow was standing by the Torrens river in Adelaide in the late afternoon sun. At that time of day, the river is in shadow, and birds standing on the eastern bank are bathed in strong direct sunlight. This gives a very dark background, which in this case, has worked fairly well.
Habitat
Large shallow waters, fresh, brackish and saline; coastal and inland; occasionally open sea; also islands, mud and sand flats. Common in suitable habitat. Highly nomadic, dispersive.
Location
Torrens River, Adelaide, South Australia
Date taken
December 19, 2008
Scientific name
Pelicanus conspicillatus
Equipment used
Panasonic FZ50
