Avocet chick (Recurvirostra avosetta)

Another of the chicks from the birds that this year bred for the first time in the area in over 200 years. This one is the last one that hatched. A bit of a runt compared to the other three from the nest. It hatched a good two hours after the others had left the nest. Just as well one of it's parents didn't give up on it. Whilst one adult stayed with the other three after escorting them across the pond the other parent returned to the nest to sit with this one giving it an occasional prod. At the time I thought it wouldn't make it but it came through in the end. Eight chicks hatched from two nests though only seven survive now. Taken at 12 days old.
