Bald Eagle in Alaska (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

This is a wild eagle at the Chlikat River in Alaska. Each winter up to 4000 eagles gather for a late season salmon run. In many cases they can be approached quite closely as I did here. Obviously care must be taken not to disturb them, so I paid close attention to their body language to make sure they were comfortable with my presence. This eagle is waiting its turn at a salmon that another eagle was sitting on right next to it. I was hand holding the 500mm lens in this case!
