Band-tailed Pigeon
Several dozen of these large pigeons sit in snags along our creek each morning waiting for us to put out birdseed. This is an adult. Juveniles are similar but lack the white nape crescent. They are the largest North American Pigeon. In our area they prefers mature woodland for nesting. Their numbers have increased in Central California in the last 50 years possibly in response to reductions in hunting, but recent studies have found an average annual decline of about 2%. overall. The current bag limit is two birds with a nine-day December season in our area. This is probably a male. Females average duller overall, with a narrower white crescent and less extensive greenish-bronze iridescent feathers on the nape. This is the Pacific Coast race "P. f. monilis" characterized by its dark purple gray head and pinkish purple gray breast. This race synonymized with interior nominate by some authors. The dark tip to the bill is characteristic of North American populations.
