a beautiful species and beautiful photo, rob! barn owls, like pretty much all owls, have special feathers that make them quiet while flying. this helps them quietly catch mice, and also spook many birders! they are shy and rarely fly near humans, but when they swoop into vision, almost anyone who sees it gets scared!
