Black-capped Vireo
This near endemic of scrubby areas in the Texas Hill Country was one of our targets. This distinctive species is notoriously difficult to see. We found that seeing them involved more extensive climbing and bushwhacking than we were able to do. So we made a special visit to Lost Maples where this bird was reportedly more easily seen. Unfortunately on arrival we discovered we still had to climb to the ridges for this bird. Worse, all the trails required fording one or more fast flowing streams for which we were completely unprepared. Just as we were about to give up, I heard an unfamiliar vireo singing in dense scrub right off the main road I was stunned to see it was an adult male Black-capped Vireo and I was pleased to manage this photo through the heavy vegetation.
