Black-chinned Sparrow
Seeing this singing male brought back memories from an earlier time. It was over 40 years ago when I first encountered this species on the south slope of Mount Diablo. For unknown reasons they disappeared from this area until now. Birds breeding here at the north edge of their scattered California range are the long-tailed "S. a. caurina" characterized by richer brown upperparts and grayer body. The wintering range of this subspecies remains unknown.
