Black-crested Antshrike (Sakesphorus canadensis loretoyacuensis)

A bird of dense shrubs near open water or clearings. This is a male. Females are rusty brown. The scientific name is a misnomer as this species does not occur anywhere near Canada. This species has a limited range in Peru along the upper Amazon and tributaries. In fact this population appears to be isolated from the rest of the range. Five or six subspecies have been described varying in the amount and extent of dark color. This is the race S. c. loretoyacuensis named for Loretoyac, Colombia which is the type locality. It differs from the nominate race by having a gray, not brown mantle. The race from eastern Brazil is much darker, almost all black.

Oh he's gorgeous Joe.... I've a real soft spot for the 'ant' birds and my favourite bird colour scheme is b/w, so no wonder I love this wee guy.

How nicely he posed for you too in that wee space!!!

Nice one lad.
