Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)

This is a full adult. Juveniles are quite different, brown with white spots. Their fairly long neck is typically tucked in, creating a stocky hunch-backed look as seen here. Most active at night, they often roost quietly in trees or bushes during the day. This is the most widespread heron in the world, breeding on all continents except Australia and Antarctica.
