A young adult male bird from the small casque and dull greyish supercilium. First record on Pulau Ubin. So status has not been determined. Either an escapee from the pet trade or a genuine wild bird which was displaced due to loss of habitat from the nearby Malaysian State of Johor where this species is locally uncommon. According to BirdLife International, this species is largely dependent on lowland evergreen forest within a region experiencing high rates of deforestation. Although it may be more tolerant of secondary habitats than some other hornbill species, it is likely to be declining moderately rapidly, and is therefore considered Near Threatened.
