Black Phoebe (juvenile) (Sayornis nigricans)

They are one of those birds that seem to go un-noticed. There is nothing spectacular about them, but there is an attraction that really has no explanation. It is a flycatcher, and this they do with exqusite perfection. From a well exposed perch they flash out and take a winged insect; un-earing, come back to the exact same place on exactly the same perch. They are perfect subjects for photography, just because they are so predictabel and that they choose such perfect perches with clear back grounds. This is a juvenile since it has the wonderful bronze-gold edges to the wing coverts and scapulars. Other than that they look like an adult: just a bit duller. They have a sweet, plaintive, almost apologetic call note. They are almost always about but hardly ever noticed. I will always stop and take images of these: they are perfect for practicing shooting skills, they give such ample opportunity. What they lack in demonstrative beauty they more than make up with simple charm.

Splendid, beautiful image of this juvenile. I love to see Black Phoebes and have taken many photos of them, but I have never done one justice as you have in this shot, Mark. :t: :t: :t:

A brown beauty that deserves more attention. Thanks for the nice shot and the detail description.
