Black redstart

Black redstart (Phoenicuras ochruros)

We had black redstarts breeding again in the centre of Manchester this year. They were difficult to locate and eventually the nest site was found. They, and some grey wagtails were nest building at the same time on the same building and during the period robbed nest material from the grey wagtails nest. However the grey wags were successful as were the black redstarts. The black redstarts had 3 chicks which fledged a couple of days before this shot was taken. Care taken not to disturb dependant young (sched 1 species). I obtained written permission to photograph on railway platforms where train photographers often go. On realising what I was doing the train photographers and spotters left the platform...a damned decent bunch I'd say and I thank them for their consideration.
