Black-tailed Trogon

Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus eumorphus)

Shadows and angle made the identification confusing and there was disagreement between our guides at the time. My current thinking is that this is an immature male Black-tailed Trogon, based on the grayish throat combined with overall green upperparts. Blue-crowned is eliminated by bill and crown color Another candidate is Collared Trogon which I believe is eliminated by the the broad-based tail which tapers towards a narrower the tip. Corrections always welcome.

A lovely setting and pretty dappled lighting (even though it made the ID hard!), Joseph.

Thanks. Not sure how great the photo is, but I've received some new expert opinions that favor immature male Black-tailed Trogon. Not many illustrations of this plumage but apparently they can show black and white barring on the outer rectrices. Will change the title pending further review.

Edit
After a number of additional opinions I believe that this is almost certainly an immature male Black-tailed Trogon. The tapered shape to the tail (broad at the base and narrower at the tip) convince me that this is a large trogon. Collared Trogon is the other possibility, but it is much smaller and its tail tends to be parallel sided. I've changed the text to reflect this.
