Boat-tailed Grackle (male)
Boat-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus major subsp. major) Male, species sexually dimorphic. The nominate is found in Texas and Louisiana and are restricted to coastal areas. Our Great-tailed grackle is also very common in the coastal areas but ranges every where else in the state as well. However, the key for us is that the male of the nominate subspecies of Boat-tailed Grackle has a dark eye whereas the male in the Great-tailed Grackle has a yellow eye. I do not know the color of the iris on the other three subspecies of Boat-tailed Grackle. Anauhac National Wildlife Refuge, northwest of High Island abutting East Bay, Chambers County, Texas, USA.
