Booted Eagle - Dark Form

Booted Eagle - Dark Form (Hieraaetus pennatus)

Dark forms of our smallest European eagle, the Booted Eagle are not seen so often as the 'classic' paler form. This can cause ID problems for some and like all raptors diving or chasing prey, their wing shape alters dramatically! With Booted Eagles their 'headlights' or 'landing lights', two white spots where the wing meets the body, are usually the quickest way to ID darker birds.

Andalucia, Spain

Very nice image!

It brings back fond memories from some years ago when we found a mixed pair of light/dark phase Booted Eagles nesting in a large tree in the grounds of a derelict hotel on the edge of the Arrocampo reservoir east of Monfrague in Caceres (I think the image of this dark phase bird is still in Opus).

I used to dream of winning the lottery & buying that place!!! ;)
