Broad-winged Hawk

Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus)

A migratory Broad-winged Hawk looks out over the cloud forest canopy through the rain. I originally posted this as a Roadside Hawk, but thanks to comments I realize it is a Broad-winged Hawk. One has a tendency to forget migrants (even relatively familiar ones) when in a new environment with so many unfamiliar species.
Habitat
Cloud Forest
Location
Upper Tandayapa Valley, Ecuador
Date taken
03-Feb., 2008
Scientific name
Buteo platypterus

Canon 40D with 500mm f4 IS lens and 1.4X, [email protected]/250, ISO 640, tripod
A superb composition :t::t: For a long time I thought it was just a colloquial name for the bird but then found out it is it's actual name!! Mundane or not is a magnificent raptor

Terrific picture. However I would say this is a Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus). they migrate from north america to Ecuador during the american winter. Jose

Low noise considering the ISO! Good image, especially like the composition and the overall mood. :t: :t: :t: :t:
