This species ranges along the Gulf Coast of Mexico to southern Texas. Males and females are similar but this one is probably a male based on its bright red bill and deeply notched tail. Notice also the white femoral tufts around its legs. Three subspecies are currently recognized. This is the northernmost "A. y. chalconota" characterized by paler belly and more bronzy cast to its back.
