The winter months in the Lowveld can be quite cold in the early mornings and its a good time to see the Burchell's Coucal, which normally hides itself away in the undergrowth. Now they come out into a sunny patch on a bare branch, turn their backs to the warmth, spread their wings and fluff up the down on their backs, so that the warmth penetrates right to the skin. Disturb them at your peril - no other bird has so perfected the glacial look!
