Burrowing Owl
This small long legged, mostly diurnal owl is seriously declining throughout California. Here it is listed as a species of special concern by the state. Many areas where I used to see them in large colonies have been lost to development or other habitat degradation. Nowadays I rarely encounter this species so was pleased to see this one peeking out from a fence post behind tall grass.
Location
Rio Vista, California, USA.
Date taken
16 January 2021
Scientific name
Athene cunicularia
What a shame they are declining. A wonderful portrait, Joseph.

That is a really nice image. Sorry to hear of the decline but not surprising. Magnificent creature.
