Bush Stone-curlew (aka thick-knee) Chick (Burhinus grallarius)

This image was taken in the staff carpark of a busy Darwin School. The parents of this 7-10 day old chick have lived in the carpark at this school for over two years, this is the third chick I have seen them raise. In a school of about 100 teachers who drive past everyday maybe 20 have realsied the birds are there. The "if I stay very still you won't see me" strategy seems to work. The 1200 students attending the school leave the birds in peace.

A lovely capture of a real cutie. Birds do pick some strange places sometimes.

Excellent portrait. Wonderful patterns on the chick and the background.

Trevor, that's just absolutely delightful! I've never seen a Bush-stone chick before, it's about as cute as they come - great work, and thanks. :t:
