California Gull (Larus californicus)

This species has expanded its range and now breeds in the southern part of San Francisco Bay. After breeding, many disperse to the coast such as this juvenile. At this age, many individuals show an all dark bill which causes them to be mistaken for other species. Soon their bill will change to the pale base with a well-defined dark tip as illustrated in most field guides.
