California Towhee

California Towhee (Melozone crissalis)

This is a confiding species. On several occasions they have hopped through an open window to explore my living room and kitchen before calmly wandering back outside. Of the five to eight recognized subspecies, this is M. c. petulans characterized by its browner color and more extensive chestnut crown. This is a common resident in much of California ranging from southern Oregon to Baja.
