California Towhee
One of the most sedentary of our birds, they seldom wander far from their home territories. An unassuming, locally common and confiding species, this near endemic to California and Baja was formerly lumped with the Canyon Towhee and known as Brown Towhee. In fact recent studies have found the California Towhee is closer to Abert's Towhee than either is to Canyon Towhee. Coastal birds north of Monterey Bay are the more buffy "M. c. petulans." However, figure 2 of the BOTW account maps the nominate subspecies all the way north to San Francisco. That map is definitely wrong because the type of P. c. petulans ("San Francisco Towhee") was collected at Palo Alto, Santa Clara County. Formerly included with other towhees in the genus "Pipilo" but now merged with tropical ground sparrows in "Melozone."

Beautiful photo of this Towhee. The first time I saw one I was sure it was a Canyon, learned something new that day. TFS
