Can you cut it up dad? (2 of 3) (Podiceps cristatus)

Great crested grebe feeding oversize fish. Today I went to Stover Country Park, in Devon, where I knew a pair of Great Crested Grebes had chicks (3). I got there around 9am and was lucky enough to have captured some nice material (IMHO) over a couple of hours, until the resident male mute swan had a testosterone surge and tried to kill them. The parents put up a tremendous fight stabbing the swan with their pointed beaks and squawking at it to draw it away from their hidden chicks and diving when the swan got near. I suppose the assault lasted for 5 minutes but seemed a lot longer. Thankfully they were all OK, but they remained very elusive afterwards. These are three of my efforts.

Location
Stover Country Park Devon
Date taken

This is a very nice image, Keith; great behaviour, angle, lighting, and setting. Great narrative too. Swans can be nasty at this time of year... well any time of year really; although it's only instinct

A nice series Keith, and good info too mate...I really like the timing on this un, and the look on that young uns face.

A beauty of a detailed family close up and location Keith, many tfs and a super fine set of posts today.

Wow! A beautiful image and great caption, Keith, only matched by this wonderful narrative.

An outstanding capture of this beautiful family. Sure must have been hard to watch the action but I'm glad the family was safe.
