Challenged ...
Challenged ...

In Jan. 2011 ... we
had gone
for a Bird-census, to
Pong Dam Reservoir Sanctuary
... a Himalayan
Ramser Site

We had to do
it in two days
moving through
the reservoir
in a boat ... that gave
us some anxious moments
when it started
leaking ...

We stayed in a
Forest Rest House
a fairly good one ...
Two White-browed Wagtails
visited the place
in the morning to feed on
the dead insects that had
come to the lights during
night ...
... and one of them had
one leg missing while
the other had only
a stump for
a foot ... yet
they were doing rather
well ...
We could capture
their images
activity and call
in a brief
video clip ... uploaded
today ...

A fabulous, detailed, sharp close-up of this beautiful bird together with your very interesting narrative, Alok !!! Thanks for sharing and for the video clip.

Those lights must provide them with an ecological niche they can fill - a place where they can find enough food in spite of their challenges. I saw a Reed Bunting with one deformed foot at a pier where people came to feed the ducks. He probably couldn't perch on a reed, but seemed to be doing ok gleening left-over seeds and crumbs from the pier surface. So I guess our human interventions are sometimes to the advantage of some birds.

A lovely tale you've told, Alok, to accompany this picture.

Many thanks for the video - I'll do the link later.

What a great backdrop to bring out this bird, Alok, and a terrific narrative. Thanks for sharing all of this.

A fine image Alok and a great tale from 2011..both are equally impressive.
