Chequered Swallowtail-without a macro lens (Papillio demolens)

No birds to photograph yesterday, but butterflies on the lawn.We were surprised that we could photograph this Chequered Swallowtail through a 400mm prime lens, using f8 a 1/5000sec at ISO 800,using our antiquated Canon 40D camera.Being 3.5 metres away from the insect ensured that it was not aware of our presence while feeding. In the film days we would have expected to use a macro lens and flash.Well-so much for modern equipment and a bit if ingenuity.
Habitat
field with wildflowers
Location
Taromeo/S E Queensland
Date taken
15th March 2016
Scientific name
Papillio demolens
Equipment used
Canon 40D,f5'6 400mm lens
One of the most beautiful butterflies I know. I saw one a few years ago, but couldn't take a photo. They are really rare here where I live. I'm happy for you to have such beautiful creatures on your lawn and the flowers to feed them.

Gosh!!! How beautiful this guy is!! And the markings go on to the body too, which I don't think I've noticed before.

A super job you've done here Hans - very well done my friend.
