Lesser Short-toed Lark
This bird seems to prefer even hotter drier habitats than the Greater Short-toed Lark. It differs from that species by its different head shape, its short stubby beak & more heavily speckled markings on the upper breast extending much further down. It also lacks the Greater S-T.L's Calandra Lark-like black neck markings.
Lesser Short-toes seem to feed less on insects & more on seeds & though scarcer & more local than Greaters tend to be resident.
At Donana both species can be seen easily on the track leading to the Jose Antonio Valverde centre. John Butler of Donana Bird Tours advised me that the Greaters prefer the orange-buff sections of track leading to the JAV centre whilst the Lessers are found on the grey section of track 1-2km east of the JAV centre. I was very dubious initially(sorry John) but was amazed to find this to be the case (perhaps the different colours of track reflect the underlying soil & thus influence the plant/insect life).

Steve,
in adition to what youve mentioned, in STL the longest tertial cover, or almost cover the primaries, while in LSTL there is an obvious primary projection, that is to say, if STL doesnt have to worn tertials. In your STL image the tertials are a bit worn, and one can see P 2, 3 (2+3 aprox. same length) and 4 sticking out a bit, but anyway its a STL .
